When I set foot in Guilin, I was greeted by its unique landscape, a breathtaking masterpiece of nature’s artistry. The karst mountains, a signature of Guilin’s landscape, rose majestically around the city, their peaks piercing the sky like ancient watchtowers. The Li River, a silvery ribbon winding through these mountains, was the perfect vantage point for witnessing the awe-inspiring beauty of this place. A cruise down this river offered panoramic views of the mountains, each turn revealing scenes so serene and picturesque that they seemed to leap out of traditional Chinese paintings.
But Guilin’s charm extends beyond its natural wonders. Its people, with their warmth and hospitality, added a layer of richness to my experience. Walking through the bustling markets and quiet alleys, I encountered smiling faces and friendly greetings. Conversations with locals, though sometimes limited by language barriers, were always filled with laughter and gestures that spoke volumes of their welcoming spirit. In these interactions, I felt a deep connection to Guilin, a sense of being embraced by a community proud of their heritage and eager to share it with the world.
The cuisine of Guilin was another avenue through which I explored the city’s culture. It was a delightful adventure for my taste buds, from the famous Guilin rice noodles. This dish perfectly captures the essence of the city’s culinary tradition, to the exotic flavours of local delicacies such as stewed duck with gingko. Each meal was an exploration of flavours, with the ingredients’ freshness and the chefs’ skill shining through in every dish. Dining in Guilin was not just about sustenance; it was an experience, a way to connect with the land and its history.
