About Semporna

Semporna, a coastal town in the Malaysian state of Sabah on the island of Borneo, is a gateway to some of the world’s most exquisite diving and snorkelling sites. This area is renowned for its strikingly clear turquoise waters and rich marine biodiversity, which make it a paradise for underwater enthusiasts. Semporna offers a glimpse into the life of the Bajau Laut , often called “sea gipsies,” who have traditionally lived a seaborne lifestyle in the region.

Mabul Resort

The archipelago around Semporna, including the famous Sipadan Island, is part of the Coral Triangle, known for its unparalleled coral diversity. Sipadan, in particular, is often ranked among the top diving destinations globally due to its unique ecosystem that attracts many marine life, including turtles, barracudas, and reef sharks.

Aside from Sipadan, the Mabul, Kapalai, and Mataking islands are must-visit locations. Mabul is celebrated for its muck diving and macro photography opportunities, Kapalai offers beautiful shallow waters perfect for beginners, and Mataking is known for its exclusive resorts and underwater post office.

Semporna Beach

Travellers to Semporna should not miss the Tun Sakaran Marine Park , which comprises eight islands and is a significant area for biodiversity conservation. The park offers opportunities for jungle trekking, cultural visits to Bajau Laut villages, and snorkelling among vibrant coral reefs.

Visitors should note that while Sipadan is a world-class diving site, access is regulated to protect its delicate marine environment. A limited number of diving permits are issued daily, so planning and early booking are essential.

Semporna’s appeal extends beyond its underwater treasures. The town provides a fascinating cultural experience with its bustling seafood markets, traditional water villages, and the warmth of the local communities. Despite its growing popularity, Semporna retains an off-the-beaten-path charm, offering travellers an authentic glimpse into Borneo’s natural beauty and cultural richness.

For those planning a trip to Semporna, it’s advisable to respect local customs and environmental guidelines to preserve the beauty and health of this unique destination.
